One Good Pup

Fewer things touch my heart more than stories about heroic animals, and this is one very special dog whose story began with abandonment and disability yet became an inspiring story of heroism before the end of his life today. Jake was there to help at times when most of us wanted to do something to help but for one reason or another could only send our thoughts and prayers - after 9/11 and after Hurricane Katrina. While not helping out at such large scale sad events, Jake was busy helping with things like therapy for burn victims and the elderly and even helping to train other dogs. His owner, Mary Flood, could only have been so very proud of what Jake was able to do, and I'd imagine she must be pretty darn special and wonderful in her own right.

Aside from hearing about the incredible life this good dog Jake lived, this had to be my favorite sentence:
On the evening of his team's arrival, Jake walked into a fancy Manhattan restaurant wearing his search-and-rescue vest and was promptly treated to a free steak dinner under a table.
Can't you just picture that in your mind? And doesn't it make you do a goofy little smile?
