On Holiday

Today is Chantix Day 89 (or day 4 of the 0.5mg dose while tapering) and Smoke-free Day 77.

My mind is on holiday over the holiday, but I will say that I'm not wanting to smoke and that I'm still not noticing any changes while tapering off Chantix (ask your doctor). Really, just none. I feel great about that! Starting tomorrow, I'm down to just 0.25mg per day. Almost seems silly to bother with that tiny amount, but that's my plan, and I'm sticking to it ;)

I've been cooking and cooking and cooking because I've really been enjoying it. In the spirit of sharing, here's what I've been doing:

For lunch today:
  • Moros and Cristianos Salad - I liked it, Tom didn't, and there are plenty of other versions with less cilantro I'd like to try (was trying to use up the cilantro I'd used in the Beef Keema a few days back). Luckily, I do think it will actually freeze well.
  • Japanese Mum's Chicken - Cute story on the recipe posting, and this was easy and fabulous, even if it does take awhile to thicken. And drumsticks are cheap.
  • Sauteed Mushrooms with Sesame & Ginger - Beyond belief delicious. Tom loves mushrooms, and now he loves me even more. Went great with above.
  • Strawberry Pie - my dear mom's recipe. I miss her so much. It's convoluted in the form I have it, but basically, 1 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons cornstarch and one cup of water mixed in saucepan. Add to it about about 1 lb of cut up strawberries, cook until thick (I went with medium heat), let cool some and pour into baked pie shell. I guessed and tucked it in the fridge from there until it set more fully.
  • Naan - By this point I was hungry again, so I made this to go with the Indian Butter Chicken in the freezer. It tasted decent, but I will need to practice because it was more like a big, flat biscuit than actual naan bread.
  • Make-Ahead Twice-Baked Potatoes - Made a 5# bag of potatoes worth of these tonight to freeze, and the filling is to die for (not that I tried any of it at all while cooking or that a last little bit didn't get returned to a skin). There were a few that were falling apart due to my over zealous scooping, so we'll have with dinner tomorrow - fried chicken (Tom's secret recipe that I don't even know), Baked Mushrooms, corn on the cob, watermelon, strawberry pie - squeezing some summer in at the last minute.
My feet hurt, and now I'm off to do something mindless and bask in the glow of the end of another productive and smoke-free day. I'll have a piece of my mom's strawberry pie while I watch some more of the Telethon and hope that a cure does come soon enough for someone else's family. Insidious diseases, all of them.

  1. I'm going to quit reading your blog if you keep blogging about food!!

  2. I don't know - kinda makes me hungry.

  3. Wow, Maggie! I just made...a bowl of cereal! LOL!!!

  4. :) Well at least I now know what kind of potatoes that I'm going to have with dinner today! Twice-baked of course.

Maggie, I can't wait until I have a day that I don't want to smoke! It's coming, I know it is.

  5. Maggie, I am on Day 14 of Chantix. I had set quit date for today, but still had 2 cigarettes left in pack, so I failed! I also found some old smokes in a drawer this morning. I don't know if anyone has been on Chantix for more than 14-15 days without quitting entirely. I am a 40+ year, 2 pack a day smoker. It is a bit difficult to break. Although I've had only 1 cigarette today, which is amazing for me. My biggest concern is becoming immune to the medication with continued use and smoking. I ask all the people on Chantix to let me know if anyone has gone this long or experienced immunity to the drug. After today, I have no more excuses, I won't buy anymore, and any hidden in the house will be gone!!!

  6. I can't even explain this cooking thing - me, Queen of All Things Drive-Thru, but I'm loving it, and Tom is, too!

Sue, there really will be days when you don't want to smoke. It's still not perfect every day for me, but it's getting better and better.

Jim, please just keep gearing up to quit. Yes, there have been folks on Chantix while still smoking way beyond the Day 8 (for me, Day 13), so you can still do this. Please take a look at Bay's Blog or even on my blog about my friend's mom at J's Mom. So, yes, it's not too late, Jim, and you can still make it happen. I hope you'll check in again to let us know how you are doing. Good luck!!
