Haiku (Prom-Kru) Friday 6/13/08

Haiku Friday
俳句の金曜日

Fifteen years old then,
the Summer I'd remember,
all these years later.

It started with Prom,
his senior year, my freshman,
6 of us, new friends.

Cinderella Prom,
the Rock and Roll McDonald's,
Denny's and Six Flags.

Twenty-four hours
creating bonds that would last
the entire summer.

In the Fall he'd go,
lots to do before college,
hurry up, be young.

Late nights, 80's songs,
Joe's convertible, downtown
cruising Chicago.

A bunch of misfits,
stoner me should not have fit,
but neither should they.

The summer lasted
forever but was gone in
the blink of an eye.

So many first times,
so many broken curfews,
so much teen drama.

Oddly Autumn came.
As quickly as we got close,
the group fell apart.

And then years later
the snippets would trickle in,
who's doing what now.

Heard Joe won the lottery,
bought a Subway shop
and became a dick.

K got religion,
a fancy Lakeshore condo;
he got smarmy, too.

My date got married,
wasn't happy, used to call
just to reminisce.

J hated herself,
tried suicide, not seeing
the beauty we saw.

C prob'ly married,
and I hope she's happy,
nicest of the bunch.

What about Maggie?
Been here and there, happy, sad,
still telling stories.

So much more to tell.
The Prom Crew covered much ground.
Stories for later.

If I could go back
and change anything at all
I'd change not a thing.

I have no regrets.
Would just cherish even more.
It was just perfect.

(Yes, just so you know that I know, even being the 80's is no excuse for all of what's going on in this picture. Clicking it twice makes that which is wrong even bigger.)

  1. awww! i think so many of us have the same exact story -- only with different names. so sad to think back about how close a group gets and how quickly it goes.. but you're right. wouldn't change a thing.

  4. Great haiku. Seems we all had "that" summer. Did you ever hear the song "White Houses" by Vanessa Carlton? You should google the lyrics... it's also about "that" summer.

  5. Fun to reminisce
in this manner, but I would
    not care to reveal

    my ‘prom’ hair-do … short
    ‘pixie cut’ left little to
do with my straight hair ;--)

Actually, this morning I remembered there was a theme, but I have only one thing on my mind ... and it's not hair. I just HAD to share my excitement at Small Reflections today ;--)
    Hugs and blessings,

  6. What a great haiku . . . so well-written. It makes all of us think back to the summer after our senior year.

p.s. Don't worry. I unknowingly had poofy sleeve syndrome back then too.

  11. Thank you so much for the chuckles, I needed it!!!
I love seeing the blasts from the past - it's what makes us who we are today.

  12. So much Nostalgia. I have feelings like that about high school and college friends!!

  13. Okay, How crazy does it make me that, except for the satiny sheen I really like that dress? It reminds me of Anne of Green Gables. My world is so very casual, I wish that every once in a while I had the excuse to really doll up like that, even now, well past the "haiku years."

The shoes, on the other hand... :-)

But 80's were rough on all of us fashion wise. :)
