Haiku Friday 7/18/08

Haiku Friday
俳句の金曜日

Now 10 years ago
almost to the exact date,
a brand new chapter.

Packed my memories
in the big ass duffel bag.
Hugg'd tearful goodbyes.

The sweet orange kitty
who'd adopted me came, too.
He more scared than I.

I was so cocky.
College grad, lived in Japan,
the world by the balls.

I'd take on the world:
marriage, good job, a baby,
live the dream, I thought.

I did not know then
just how badly I would fail
all across the board.

Each loss cut so deep,
into where who I am lives,
at the core of me.

Bold dreams gave way to
a quiet resignation,
expecting little.

But failure's lessons
are painful yet powerful,
if we let them be.

Useless self-loathing
will not take me near as far
as true accounting.

Who I am today
is stronger than 10 years past
but much less cocksure.

I plan, but life's still
full of unpredictables-
that's the stuff of life.

Changes are afoot
and I delight in seeing
my life in 10 more.

  2. I'm gonna print this one and take it on my holiday with me to contemplate. It's quite profound in regard to where I'm at and something I was reading yesterday. Catch up later. Cx

  4. wow. (wow to you!)

i just love your haikus. especially the world by the balls line. i remember that feeling too well. it really is amazing to sit and think about where you are right now and compare it to where you thought you'd be. it never is quite what you pictured, huh? that road is always so much more wind-y and curvy.

and thank you so much for your sweet comment. :)

You get better with each passing day, keep your eyes open at the wonder that's playing out in front of you.
